The Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar

Survey

The new era in the development of oil and gas sector of Zanzibar was initiated in 2011 when the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar and the Government of Ras al Khaimah embarked on a joint effort with respect to bilateral cooperation that included the petroleum subsector.

The Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar entered into its first Production Sharing Agreement (PSA) with RAKGAS Company of Ras al Khaimah on 23 October 2018 for the Pemba – Zanzibar Block to undertake Oil and Gas exploration. The exploration activities are conducted under this PSA are as follow:-

  • Full Tensor Gravity Survey (FTG)

FTG was conducted on March 14, 2017 in Pemba-Zanzibar Block. RakGas Company from Ras al Khaimah – United Arab Emirates contracted BELL GEOSPACE company to conduct the survey. FTG exercise took around 6 weeks to cover the exploration area

  •           2D Seismic Survey
The 2D seismic survey was conducted in Pemba-Zanzibar Block from November 2017 and completed in February 2019. BGP Company was subcontracted by RAKGAS to conduct the survey. The 2D seismic survey covered in offshore, onshore and Transition Zone areas of Pemba-Zanzibar Block. About 3776.6 lines kilometres were acquired during the survey. The lines kilometres for each area as follow: –
  • Offshore – 2815.6 km
  • Onshore – 717 km
  • Transition Zone – 244 km
The result of FTG and 2D seismic survey have pointed out the possibility of the existence of rocks with likely oil and natural gas reserves of about 3.8 Trillion Cubic Feet in Pemba -Zanzibar Block. At the moment, Zanzibar is in the preparation of conducting 3D seismic survey for areas which shows potential prospects in order to pin-point the best location for drilling the exploration well.
